Natural tooth colour differs from person to person, and can be seen as a mark of personality. Teeth have a fine perforated dentifrice layer, the colour of which, over time, can be influenced by external factors, causing the natural white colour to become yellow or stained. Teeth whitening or bleaching, over other dental treatments, such as dental veneers, is the most economical and quick procedure to correct this problem.
Why teeth change colour, becoming yellow or stained?
Teeth can change colour due to structural disorders that occur in the mother’s womb or during childhood. The effects of antibiotic use, foods, drinks (especially tea, coffee, and cigarette consumption) together with high fluoride amounts found in the water we drink, can create colour changes in teeth.
There are two basic causes of colour changes in teeth – “inner colouring” and “outer colouring”.
Inner Colouration: Stains and colour changes in the teeth that cannot be removed with regular dental care, such as brushing. These colour changes are usually caused by congenital defects, or by the various effects caused by drug intake.
External Colouration: External staining of the teeth caused by smoking, drinking tea, coffee, and carbonated and/or sugary drinks, eating sugary and ‘sticky’ foods, and consuming food products with food colourings, are usually removed by regular dental hygiene methods such as brushing and flossing.
What methods are used in Teeth Whitening in Turkey?
There are four recognised Teeth Whitening methods:
Home Tooth Whitening
In-Office Tooth Whitening
Combination Home and Office Tooth Whitening
Single Tooth Whitening (‘Devital’ Bleaching)
How durable is Teeth Whitening?
This question really relies on the patient’s own oral and dental hygiene. All teeth whitening treatments will be affected by the consumption of food and cigarettes over a certain period of time. However, tooth whitening lasts, on average, for between 6 months and 2 years. This time frame can be extended if the treatment is later supported by a further visit to the dentist.
What after-care should be taken after teeth whitening?
After the tooth whitening procedure has taken place, the patient should refrain from smoking, eating and drinking such foods as cola, tea, coffee, wine, sour juice, and alcohol, for at least two weeks. If this advice is not adhered to, an adverse reaction to the whitening process, such as staining and colouring of the whitened teeth may be observed.
Will whitening damage the teeth?
There will be no harm done to the teeth if applied by a dental specialist following the correct procedures.
Is bleaching a painful procedure?
Tooth whitening is not a painful process. Prior to treatment, our physician will apply a protective gel to the patient’s gums to ensure that the whitening gel doesn’t affect them.
However, once the procedure has been completed, it is very normal for your teeth to feel tenderness for a few days. In order to minimize this sensitivity, our dental physician will apply fluoride to the teeth at the end of the procedure.
